What is Ars Linguārum?
Ars Linguārum is a web application that provides information about Latin words. Its primary function is to show inflections of words from its user-editable dictionary. Dictionary entries require only some forms of the word to be given, depending on the regularity of the word. An entry could require anywhere from 1 word (for simple nouns like amīcus) to many forms (for highly irregular verbs like sum). Luckily, manual forms for verbs can usually be done by providing a stem plus an ID for a verb ending type (such as "ier+am" for the indicative active pluperfect of ) instead of providing all six forms (2 numbers × 3 persons).
Who are you?
I'm just this guy, you know? I'm Kai Tamkun, and I really like languages. Like, a lot. So I decided to create a program using my knowledge of Latin from the four years I've taken in high school (kudos again to my teachers!). I'm also interested in poetry and dumb humor.
What are your plans for Ars Linguārum?
World domination, primarily. Originally, I was making it just because I could. Now, though, I plan to use it as a base for a much more sinister project called Ars Fābulārum. And, strangely enough, part of Ars Fābulārum (which is still in very early stages of development because Ars Linguārum is a higher priority) is used in Ars Linguārum (the word-finding code). So they're interdependent to some degree. Current features I plan to add include:
  • Generation and display of the IPA representation of a word's pronunciation
  • A syllable divider (done!) with elision support (not so done) to aid poetry composition
    • A meter checker to ensure your poetry fits a given meter
  • Separate lexicons and the ability to choose desired lexicons while excluding unwanted ones
  • A proper entry parser (to, for example, allow | inside strings) rather than the haphazard one currently in use
And what's Ars Fābulārum?
Fortasse nimiō ambitiōsa. In essence, it's a program to generate stories (hence the Fābulārum in its name). If all goes well, it'll be able to generate characters, plots and settings and construct a story all by itself, perhaps even in poetry with proper meter and elision. There's not a particularly high chance that I'll finish it anytime soon because of how ambitious it is.
May I use your lexicon?
Go ahead! If you're sharing whatever you're using with other people, though, you should include a link to here. You don't have to do so, but I'd certainly appreciate it. Also, you should probably include links to the sources for words that show them. Luckily, the tag entries for (internet) sources contain links.
